How to Build a Marketing Data Pipeline (BigQuery + Looker Studio)
A Marketing Data Pipeline is the system that moves data from platforms like Google Ads, Meta Ads, CRMs, Shopify, and internal tools into a clean reporting layer. Without it, teams depend on exports, spreadsheet fixes, and inconsistent KPI definitions. With it, marketing performance becomes easier to trust and easier to act on.
The first step is source mapping. List every platform that contributes to marketing decisions: ad spend, leads, revenue, campaign metadata, CRM stages, and customer records. Each source should have an owner, refresh frequency, and clear business purpose. This prevents pipelines from collecting data that nobody uses.
The second step is ingestion into BigQuery. APIs, n8n workflows, scripts, and managed connectors can extract data on schedule. BigQuery should preserve raw source data so teams can audit historical changes. From there, staging tables clean field names, date formats, currencies, campaign naming, and CRM statuses.
The third step is modeling. SQL and dbt-style transformations turn raw data into reporting tables for metrics like CPA, CPL, ROAS, conversion rate, pipeline value, lead quality, and revenue attribution. Good models make dashboard calculations simple and consistent.
Finally, connect Looker Studio to the modeled data. A strong dashboard should not only show numbers; it should help teams identify what to scale, optimize, or stop. When the pipeline, warehouse, and dashboard work together, marketing reporting becomes a reliable decision system instead of a manual task.
